Pear Shape Solutions

Question from a reader (which I can 100% relate to, being a pear shape myself):

” I was wondering if you could answer a quick question for me.  I have a small bust, and a disproportionately large rear, which means that I have a quite challenge matching my top to bottom, and vise versa.  How do I balance the two out when wearing lingerie?  Is there a particular cut of panty or bra that I should wear?  Thanks very much!” – Jessica

Well, Jessica, this is an excellent question and a dilemna that many of us face. If you are a size (or two) smaller on the top then on the bottom, you often feel flat up top and round on the bottom, which doesn’t work well in dresses or form-fitting clothes. A few tips for you:

1. If you are wearing a dress that is tight in the bottom and loose on top, wear a slightly-padded bra and add silicon inserts to fill out that baggy top. I am not above doing this myself, and have definitely busted them out on several occasions to balance out my booty. I like cleavage cupcakes by her look. They are silicon and will last forever.

Super Power Panty

2. If you need to smooth out your bottom, or even lose a couple inches from your hips, you can add a smoother short to your collection. I like these power shorts by Spanx. They suck in your hips and thighs, but don’t advance too high on your tummy–as you don’t really need that coverage or suction.

Vince Camuto One Button Blazer

3. This isn’t really underwear related, but over any outfit you should rock a blazer. A blazer’s shoulders balance our your hips and will make any outfit look better. Make sure to look for one that covers your hips and is structured–like this one from Nordstrom. This blazer hits right below the hips and visually will balance a pair shape.

4. Back to bras: under a t-shirt and jeans wear a bra that creates a bust-line outside of your body. You can do this by looking for a bra that lifts and separates. Even if you are petite up top, you can find a slightly padded or push up bra that pushes the bust up and out –creating a curve that gives the hourglass effect. The Gigi bra from Le Mystere does just that–see how the cups round out on the sides? This is what you want in your bras (as long as you don’t mind a little padding).

Thanks, Jessica. I hope this helps!!

How to Wear a Colorful or Patterned Bra

Scottish Queen

I am asked several times a week how one can wear a printed bra under their clothing. While it might seem impractical to wear a print or patterned bra, you simply treat it like a black bra and wear it under darker clothing. If you want to be creative, you can wear a pattered bra under sheer clothing to show it off as an accessory. Here I have put together an outfit to rock with Huit’s Scottish Queen bra. This bra fits perfectly and is available through an E cup. I highly recommend it for the summer months when you don’t want a lot of bulk or padding.

Remember, every outfit starts with what’s underneath it. Enjoy!

Lingerie Therapy 101: A Guide to Bra Styles

Oftentimes, when I ask a customer if they prefer a demi vs. a push-up bra, they look at me as though I just asked them to answer an algebra equation. We are girls, and we should know the difference between a push-up, plunge, or straight-up underwire bra, right? Well, not really. We know (thanks to Oprah and various studies) that 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size–what makes us think we should know what style we are wearing?

Here are some tips to help you figure out what styles you like. It will make your life easier when shopping for bras.

A Demi bra, also called a half-cup, has a low bustline that exposes more breast and is therefore a very sexy bra. This style typically has vertical seaming, which creates a nice, round breast shape. Note that some companies call any bra that reveals a lot of breast a demi- just meaning there is less coverage. The demi above is from Agent Provacateur, one of my favorite designers.

Who should wear this: Petite and average breast sizes, tear-drop shaped breasts.

Balconette styles work well for most breast shapes. They typically have a diagnally seamed bustline that offers a little more coverage that a demi. The underwire reaches up in-between the breasts in a U-shape. Horizontal or diagonal seams in a traditional balconette provide a natural shape, whereas vertical seams in a demi-balconette offer a round shape. You can find lined or unlined versions of this style. Panache makes several styles of balconettes for those with ample bosoms.

Who should wear this: Everyone:)

seductive comfort customized lift braPush-up bras are available with or without padding. You can spot them by looking at the cup shape – it resembles a triangle (see Calvin Klein above), with scarce underwire in-between the breasts, it reaches up higher up on the sides. This causes the breasts to push towards one another which creates cleavage!

Who should wear this: Anyone who wants some cleavage. Especially good after children or dramatic weight loss to regain the look of “top boob.”

Plunge bras do exactly what they say: they plunge at the neckline. You can spot them by the deep V-shape they make in-between the breasts. These bras allow you to wear deep v-neck tops with no worries. While they are very sexy you can find plunge styles with less or fuller coverage, depending upon the style. This Huit bra in an unlined plunge (love the color!).

Who should wear this: Anyone who owns a low-neckline top or dress. Full-busted women who want a sexier option than a full-cup bra.

A T-Shirt bra is an incredibly popular style that works well under the clingiest of fabrics and tight-fitted tops. You can find them in traditional nude, black, and a variety of colors (Gap bra above). This style typically has a molded or contour cup*.

Who should wear this: Everyone.

In case you were wondering: A molded cup is created by using a heat-process to mold the cup with a round shape. Some molded cups are lined, but others are

simply underwire with no lining. Molded cups are a trickier fit if you have less than round breasts (like most of us!) you will have gapping at the top of the cup.

A contour cup bra is what you see in the picture here–a bra with a built-in contour lining that creates the perfect breast shape. Even if you are lop-sided or petite, this cup type does the trick to even things out and present a uniform, round shape.

This is hardly a complete list of styles, but a good start. I will definitely be revealing more lingerie and bra styles in the future! For a comprehensive look at lingerie and lingerie styles, buy my book!

Best-selling Push-up Bras Revealed

I have a love/hate relationship with push-up bras. While I don’t necessarily approve of the messaging around “increase your cups by two sizes” —  I admit that the cleavage I am able to achieve with properly placed padding is genius. Sometimes I need the extra padding to fill out my dress or blouse (my husband calls it false advertising).

The rise in popularity of push-up bras is undeniable. For several US companies, the push-up style represents their best selling bras. Here are a few to love/hate with me:

Girls Gone Wild, Indeed. Madonna Has Still Got It!

Girl gone wild? Madonna prominently displays her assets on the cover for her latest single, Girl Gone Wild

Dear Madonna,

You inspired me to buy my first pair of fingerless lace-gloves in junior high. I think that every decade, since I can remember, you have been relevant in fashion and pop-culture.

Here you are at 53, in a  bra, on your new single: Girls Gone Wild album cover. It is kind of ridiculous, ironic, and very sexy. I say bravo! I pray I can look that good at 83.

All my love,

Jen
